I don't know if it's the rainy day weather getting me down or the beautiful ceremony that Jim Alba and Dulles Little League put together on Saturday honoring Gavin Rupp that reminded just how much I miss that kid and how far we still have to go. It hasn't been a year - yet I feel tired but with unwavering determination to make a change. It seems like the momentum we had in August and again in October has dwindled even though some great things have happened toward that change. There are still volunteers with unlimited energy that are pusing that rock up the mountain at awesome organizations like Kyle's Kamp, Smashing Walnuts, Journey 4 A Cure,Stillbrave, The Truth 365, and even my own little project, My Truth in 365, but it seems like something bad has to happen before people get energized up to do something, support, or donate.
I find it increasingly interesting how people choose to spend their money these days. What if we "Groupon'ed" a charity? If your donation meant more than the amount you donated? Would large corporations like Apple step up? Having researched Apple, the Gates Foundation, to name a few, They are doing good things. Putting money in to education, and HIV/AIDS programs. So how do we make our cause loud enough for people to take notice? I don't have the answer.
I do know that we are not as big as "Pink" - Breast Cancer. Kudos to them for getting to that point to but aren't we all in this fight together?
Putting a call out for volunteers is easy and you will see a sea of hands go up right away but sadly when it is time to do the real work, you suddenly find yourself with a small handful of wonderful volunteers that are willing to help try and tackle the work. These few volunteers who will spread themselves thin, go to the ends of the earth for you, and push you harder than you thought you could be pushed. We all know those people. We all are thankful for those people. We all love those people because without them we would be sunk. And you have to ask where did everyone else go? So I ask you. I implore you. Be the Change. We need you.
